Otter Fishing Tour in Bangladesh

The fascinating ‘Otter Fishing’, a uniquely engineered process of using semi-aquatic otters to catch fish in the rivers, has already long died out in various parts of the world. However, this centuries old tradition is still in practice in Bangladesh, particularly in a number of fishermen villages in the district of Narail. In Gobra village near Chitra river, most of the fishermen families have a pack of 6-7 otters in captivity. Fishing with otters is a part of their livelihood.

This tradition was passed to them by their fathers and grandfathers. The whole otter fishing system is very unique. It involves four people, a boat, a net, and some tamed otters. The otters do not catch the fish themselves, instead they manage to spot fish among the plants and chase them towards the fishing net placed next to the boat. When the fishermen raise their nets they are often empty.
